Wednesday Workshop ~ What if Your Valentine Has Alzheimer’s?

Wednesday Workshop ~ What if Your Valentine Has Alzheimer’s?

Hello and welcome to Wednesday Workshop. In honor of Valentine’s day, we thought it would be a good idea to share some helpful tips with you about celebrating Valentine’s day with someone who is living with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.

Unless you and your loved one never celebrated Valentine’s day, it’s a good idea to continue the celebrations, not just for your loved one but for you as well. Yes the holiday will be different from others in the past, but it’s better than pretending the day doesn’t exist. To not celebrate would ignore the history that you two share.

This Valentine’s Day, celebrate the day in a way that makes sense for your loved one and the family. Keep the focus around the celebration of love. Do what you can to acknowledge your marriage, your commitment to each other, or simply share quality time together doing something you both enjoy.

Simple things like giving roses, exchanging Valentine’s cards or sharing a box of chocolates together can help get the celebrations started. Sing loving songs to one another. Kiss, hug and hold hands. And most of all, tell your loved one how much they mean to you!

At the end of the day, you’ll feel better knowing that you honored your marriage or commitment on this day of love!
