Wednesday Workshop – How to Help a Loved One Who is Resistant to Home Care

Hello and welcome to Wednesday Workshop. As your loved one ages, you may notice that they begin to struggle with personal care, getting around and/or handling finances. This may indicate the need for in-home care when you can’t be there. However, your loved one may not always be onboard with this decision. How can you provide help to someone who doesn’t want it?

Many elderly individuals dread the idea of giving up their independence. Bringing someone into the home, even for help, can feel like an attack on their independence. This is usually why a loved one will resist help.

So how can we help?

The first thing you’ll want to do is figure out the source of fear or resistance. So, listen to your loved one. Ask questions like, “Is it privacy you’re worries about?” Listen to their concerns so that you can work together to find a compromise.

Next, express the need for care. Talk about all the things they will gain from having help around the house. Discuss how the additional assistance will help them maintain an independent lifestyle. Focus on all the positive things an in-home caregiver will bring to them!

Lastly, try to pick the right moment to talk about hiring a caregiver with your loved one. Sometimes difficult subjects require some finesse. Start the conversation when both you and your loved one are comfortable and in a good mood. You can ask a friend or family member to be there for support when you have the conversation with your loved one.

Remember to ask your loved one about their preferences when it comes to their care. The more they feel involved with the decision making, the better they will feel when paid care is provided.
