Most hobbies provide an ideal way to relax and to manage stress. An hour of painting or reading can stimulate a relaxation response that will help you sleep. Focusing on the details of sculpting, cooking a gourmet meal or building a model cars can distract you completely from worries over things you cannot change.


For caregivers, hobbies are emotional releases, creative outlets, ways of building community and a means for keeping minds and hands active.

1. Chess

Men have been playing chess for thousands of years in order to fine tune their concentration, critical thinking, abstract reasoning, and problem solving skills.

2. Playing the Guitar

Guitars have the advantage of being relatively cheap and having an easier learning curve for beginners. There are tons of resources online that provide free guitar lessons, just try YouTube.

3. Woodworking

In addition to giving you a useful skill, many woodworking hobbyists report lower stress levels and increased patience.

4. Classic Car Restoration

With classic car restoration you’ll learn a bit of engineering and improve your problem solving skills.

5. Collecting

In collecting, the thrill is in the chase. Pick your poison. Duck stamps, baseball cards, antique typewriters, whatever.

6. Fishing

It’s a great way for friends to bond and father and sons to spend time with each other. It doesn’t cost too much to get started with fishing.

7. Sports

This one seems kind of obvious. Physical activity boosts your testosterone level, keeps you healthy and in shape, staves off depression, and soothes your stress.

8. Hiking

Nothing beats a long hike to relax, get some fresh air, and rejuvenate your man spirit. What’s great about hiking is that in most cases it’s completely free.

9. Alcohol/Cigar/Pipe Smoking Connoisseur

You can walk into the store and grab whatever whisky you recognize or is cheapest. Or can you can become a bonafide whisky connoisseur, understanding why one whisky differs from another, where each brand comes from, and which you truly like.

10. Exercising

It’s not exactly a hobby, but nevertheless is a must in older age. Exercising increases fitness levels, builds muscular strength, and keeps diseases at bay. So go for walks everyday in the morning. To make sure that you stick to this routine, make an exercise buddy who joins you in this always. If you go for a walk in the park, you might find people your age and who get to know you, and may make a few good friends there!

Having a hobby or a passion, is very important for older adults. This way, you have something to look forward to everyday. So to add meaning to your life, to ward off any feelings of loneliness and to stay happy, take up a fun hobby!
