Monday Mojo for Caregivers – Why Being Selfish is Okay (Sometimes)

Hello and welcome to Monday Mojo for Caregivers. If you’re unhappy with your current situation then maybe you need to spend more time on yourself. Sometimes, it’s okay to be selfish.

First of all, remember that you can’t help others if you haven’t helped yourself first. Focusing on fixing the issues in your life puts you in a position to help others. It’s similar to when you’re on a plane during an emergency. You have to put your own oxygen mask on before helping others.

Secondly, you owe it to yourself to make yourself a priority. It’s a truly noble thing to take on caring for a loved one and even more commendable if you can do it with a smile and a good attitude. The truth is that your family may need you far less than you think. If they are happy and healthy then you’ve done a good job and can begin to work on yourself a bit more. Another thing to keep in mind is to utilize supportive services to assist you with your caregiving responsibilities. That way, you can get back to doing the thing you love.

By all means, give generously, be there for your friends no matter what, and put other people’s needs before your own. But just remember that you can only give what you have. So, make the most of what you have by being a selfish person when the time is appropriate, and you’ll have a lot more to give.
