Monday Mojo for Caregivers – The Happy Caregiver – 10 Habits of a Happy Caregiver
These days, it seems almost natural for a caregiver to put their loved one’s comfort and happiness above their own. But in reality, both are equally important.
Here are the 10 habits of a happy caregiver:
- Nurture your mind and body
Caregivers must replenish and renew themselves physically and mentally to avoid burnout.
- Keep an eye on your health
If the caregiver becomes sick, who will take care of the person in need?
- Find support
It’s healthy to vent your feelings to friends, a family member or a support group so find time to do so.
- Eat healthy
A nutritious, balanced diet keeps energy levels up and health risks at bay.
- Exercise
Staying physically active helps reduce stress and it naturally improves your mood.
- Meditate
Meditation, yoga and deep breathing are just some ways to help a caregiver slow down and put things into perspective.
- Set personal goals
Caregivers should write down personal goals that remind them of what they want to achieve outside of their job.
- Keep a journal
Writing down frustrations and feelings is a great way to let them go and move on with life.
- Be grateful
At times, caregiving is stressful but be grateful for the opportunity to make someone’s life better and more enjoyable.
- Take a day off
Happy caregivers understand the importance of taking time off to renew and to care for themselves to avoid burnout.
