Monday Mojo for Caregivers – The 7 Day Caregiver Happiness Challenge
The Dalai Lama once said, “Happiness is not something ready-made. It comes from your own actions.” Since so many of us are looking for happiness, we came up with the 7 Day Caregiver Happiness Challenge. I trust that by committing to these practices and by doing more of the things that bring meaning and joy into our lives, we will all start appreciating our lives a lot more and as a result we will become happier.
So here it is, the 7 Day Caregiver Happiness Challenge:
Day 1 Challenge – Write down three good things that happened today, including why those things were good.
Benefit: People who choose to focus on the good things in their life are significantly happier. Focusing on the good will make you less anxious and decrease feelings of depression.
Day 2 Challenge – Today, do as many extra acts of kindness for others as possible (try to do at least 3 acts of kindness).
Benefit: When we do things for others, it not only helps them but it also gives us a big boost. Research shows that people who do more acts of kindness tend to be happier.
Day 3 Challenge – Calm your mind for 15 minutes today.
Benefit: Meditation and mindfulness practices have been shown to improve mood, increase concentration, reduce anxiety and increase general happiness.
Day 4 Challenge – Do something physically active and enjoyable for at least 30 minutes today.
Benefit: Staying active isn’t just good for our physically health, it also boosts our mood, improves our brain function and helps alleviate stress, anxiety and depression.
Day 5 Challenge – Lighten your material load. On this day, make time to go through your house and take out all the stuff you no longer need or use. Give it all away and see how much better, lighter and happier you will feel.
Benefit: When you give away things you no longer use, or need, you make room in your life for better things to come your way. Lightening your material load can be a real therapeutic experience.
Day 6 Challenge – Today, let go of drama, toxic relationships, thoughts and behaviors.
Benefit: Letting go doesn’t mean that you don’t care about someone anymore. It’s just realizing that the only person you really have control over is yourself. On this day you will learn to shift your focus from the bad on to the good for a happier life.
Day 7 Challenge – Today is a complaint free day.
Benefit: On this day, give up the need to complain about the people, situations and events that make you unhappy. Instead, focus on the things that make you feel good and on the things that are right with the world!
After you have completed your 7 Day Caregiver Happiness Challenge, your conscious mind will have the choice of stopping or carrying on with these healthy and positive practices. You have seen the benefits along the way and your unconscious mind will want to continue if it has been beneficial.
