Monday Mojo for Caregivers – Questions to Ask if You’re Stressed

Hello and welcome to Monday Mojo for Caregivers. If you are feeling overwhelmed by stress, you are not alone; it’s practically a fact of life in the caregiving world. Stress is good if it motivates you but it’s bad if it wears you down. The next time stress hits, try not to lose control. Instead, calm yourself by asking the following questions.

  1. Am I literally going to die right now?

If your answer is yes, now would be an excellent time to panic. However, your biological stress responses are counterproductive in almost every civilized situation. So before getting completely hysterical, remind yourself that right here, right now: You’re physically safe. Just breathe in, breathe out. That’s all it takes to get by.

  1. Where is the nearest place to escape to?

We all have a compulsion to escape from certain situations. In fact, removing yourself from a situation is an excellent self-calming strategy. In your next hyper-stressed moment, stride briskly to the nearest unoccupied room or (even the restroom), lock yourself in and give yourself five minutes to calm down.

  1. Why is my stress bucket full right now?

After you’ve had a good cry or scream, get analytical. What’s really going on here? Stress is usually created by a combination of circumstance and personal choice. Look for patterns. Do you habitually assume too much responsibility, fail to communicate, forget to rest?
