Monday Mojo for Caregivers – How to Stay Positive When Times are Tough

This past year proved to be very challenging to many caregivers. Many took on the care of their mother or father, while others continue to provide 24/7 care to an elderly loved one. When you’re going through tough times, you may find it difficult to look on the bright side and stay positive. Sometimes, problems seem overwhelming.

However, we all have our share of problems and we don’t want to live our lives being sad or stressed. Staying positive when you’re going through rough patches is possible if you keep these tips in mind.

  1. Breathe deeply

When we take full, deep breaths in and out, it allows our bodies to stay calm. That calmness gives us the clarity to see a situation for what it really is.

  1. Focus on the good

When one thing goes wrong, it can feel like everything is ruined. It’s tempting to sink into negative thinking but don’t succumb to it. Focus on the light. Focus on the good! Remember to count your blessings.

  1. Find what makes you happy

Do some soul searching to figure out what truly makes you happy. Surround yourself with those things (or people) to maintain your positive outlook. Sometimes, small things can have a big impact on you. Looking at old photos of happy times or hearing your favorite song can instantly put you in a better mood.

  1. Create a mantra for yourself

A popular mantra that many caregivers use is “This too shall pass”. Is there a short sentence or quote that lifts your spirit? There are thousands of possible mantras to utilize so create one that is customized for you. When times are tough, quietly repeat the mantra to yourself.
