Monday Mojo for Caregivers – Building Up Your Resilience
Hello and welcome to Monday Mojo for Caregivers. In today’s world, family caregivers need to be able to adapt to change or they will be overwhelmed by it. The truth is that, the only thing that is consistent in this world is change. Sometimes, change is a result or a choice, but other times it comes unexpectedly. Building up your resilience will help you avoid being constantly overwhelmed or frustrated by the changes that come into your life.
- Remember that change is part of life
You can’t expect for things to always remain the same. Your loved one with Alzheimer’s or dementia has a progressive disease, which means it will change over time. When it comes to building up your resilience, flexibility is key! When you’re always looking for new ways to adapt, it makes you more able to cope with difficulties in the future.
- Try to maintain a positive outlook
Begin to treat your “failures” as a learning experience. In your head, go back and analyze the situation. What can you learn and what can you do different next time? By doing this, you build up your inner strength. Try to avoid seeing a crisis as insurmountable. You can’t always control what happens to you, but you can control how you react to the situation. Being optimistic helps at times like these.
- Reflect from time to time
When faced with adversity, try to determine some positive ways in which you’ve dealt with the challenge. It’s easy to forget your past moments of resilience, so reflect often. Keep a journal or notebook to jot down your daily “wins”. Look back on your journal when times feel hard.
