Monday Mojo for Caregivers – 2 Ways to Be More Compassionate

Hello and welcome to Monday Mojo for Caregivers. In order to truly understand the power of compassion, it’s necessary to practice it first. Learn to put yourself in someone else’s shoes, imagine why they do what they do, and be sensitive to their struggles. A wise man once said, “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about.”

As you read the following suggestions, think about how you can apply them into your own life.

  1. Give your undivided attention

Listen fully. You don’t necessarily have to fix anything or offer a solution. Sometimes, just listening and seeking to understand someone is a huge act of compassion. Listening attentively, without judging and with compassion—this is the best gift we can give another. Avoid the temptation to talk about yourself and times you’ve felt the same way.

  1. Speak from the heart

If you’re truly listening, then you’ll know when it’s appropriate to respond. Make eye contact when you do. You won’t need to say much. A genuine statement like, “I’m here for you” can make a big difference to someone in need. The key is to mean what you say. Make the person feel your words. They will be able to decipher the real from the fake.

Acting compassionately towards the ones you love is a practice, not a perfection. Let’s all practice more kindness, gentleness and compassion to make our lives and the world better.
