Dementia Specific Hurricane Preparedness Program™

Alzheimer's Dementia Specific Hurricane PlanningAs the only non-profit organization in Palm Beach, Broward, Martin and St. Lucie counties dedicated strictly  to meeting the needs of Alzheimer’s caregivers, the Alzheimer’s Care Resource Center provides the only dementia specific hurricane preparedness program that addresses the challenges, and meets the unique needs, faced by caregivers before, during and after a storm.

For caregivers that live both locally and out-of-state, The Alzheimer’s Care Resource Center offers extensive dementia specific hurricane and disaster preparedness planning services to caregivers of those with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia or other cognitive impairment,  and who are vulnerable during hurricane season or in the event of a disaster.

What we know for sure is that a hurricane can be a disaster for everyone involved.  For those that are responsible for the care of someone with Alzheimer’s, dementia or other cognitive impairment, it can be a trigger that causes their loved ones symptoms to spiral out of control at the worst possible time.

Our geriatric care manager’s and registered nurse consultants will work with you before, during and after the storm. They will ensure that you have a place to go if you’re evacuated and if you choose to stay at home, they’ll also make sure you have plenty of supplies, extra medications and when possible, a caregiver to see you through.

Alzheimer's Dementia Specific Hurricane PlanningThe Dementia Specific Hurricane Preparedness Program Includes:

  • Providing a comprehensive, dementia specific needs assessment.  This crucial first step is absolutely essential in helping caregivers to create an individualized, dementia specific hurricane plan that is unique to the needs of the person they care for.
  • Development of a dementia specific hurricane plan. At a minimum this may involve purchasing supplies for remaining at home; helping to sign-up for a special-needs shelter; making hotel reservations or out-of-town travel arrangements, addressing safety concerns; medication management and psychological issues.
  • Communicating and staying in contact with your family or other out-of-state emergency contacts.
  • Coordinating dementia specific private duty care.
  • Coordinating and purchasing emergency supplies.
  •  Remaining in contact with you during a hurricane watch to assure that your emergency plan is properly implemented.
  •  Visiting the  patient as soon as possible after the storm to assure their safety and well-being. We will also attempt to reach family members and take steps to address any needs that have arisen during and after the storm.

Although no amount of planning will 100% guarantee that you and your loved one won’t be negatively impacted by a storm,  the Alzheimer’s Care Resource Center’s Dementia Specific Hurricane Program can help assure that before a storm hits, our caregivers are prepared and quipped to not only weather the storm, but to help their loved one get through it in the very best way possible.
