Ask the Alzheimer’s Expert
Question: My mom has Alzheimer’s disease and can’t read anymore and doesn’t spend much time watching TV. I need ideas that will keep her busy!
Answer: As Alzheimer’s disease progresses, most patients give up reading and because they can no longer follow a story line, usually stop watching TV. There are other things that you can do with your mom to help keep her busy and cognitively stimulated.
Although you didn’t tell me how advanced she is, her are some things that most patients can do either alone, or with supervision:
- Fold clothes
- Any sorting activity such as silverware (remove the knives); coins; socks etc
- Jigsaw puzzles
- Set the table
- Assist with cooking or baking (with supervision)
- Watch family videos
- Look through photo albums
- Go for a walk (together)
- Listen to music
